Abstract
Rare birds and unusual observations in Switzerland in 2003. In 2003 the Swiss Rarities Committee examined 182 reports of 80 species, 84 % of which were accepted. The highlights in the year 2003 were the first record of the Pacific Golden Plover Pluvialis fulva and the first breeding record of the Red-breasted Flycatcher Ficedula parva. Other interesting sightings included the fourth visit of the same colour-ringed Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber to the Chablais de Cudrefin (Lake Neuchâtel), the expansion of White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos in eastern Switzerland with five breeding records, the first and second record of a Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus of the dark morph, the third record of the Black-shouldered Kite Elanus caeruleus, the forth record of both Northern Gannet Sula bassana and Lesser Spotted Eagle Aquila pomarina as well as a small influx of Pectoral Sandpipers Calidris melanotos with five observations, and the first overwintering Grey Phalarope Phalaropus fulicarius. At the end of 2003, the Swiss list comprised 390 species in categories A, B (birds of wild origin) and C (introduced species), 383 of which have been recorded since 1900. Seven species of uncertain origin remain in category D (doubtful origin). In the text, the three figures after the German and scientific names refer to the number of records/individuals, 1900–1991, 1992–2002 and in 2003, respectively. The species are listed systematically, within the species by alphabetic order of the cantons and by date. Detailed information is given as follows: location, date(s), number of individuals (one individual if not specified), age and sex if known, available documentation (photographs, video, skins) and in brackets the name(s) of the observer(s).
