Abstract
Rare birds and unusual observations in Switzerland in 2015. – In 2015, the Swiss Rarities Committee examined 327 reports of a total of 90 species, 181 (55 %) of which were accepted and 18 of which refer to past years. The highlights of 2015 were the first records of Pacific Diver Gavia pacifica and Hume’s Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus humei as well as the second records of Green-winged Teal Anas carolinensis, Desert Wheatear Oenanthe deserti and Pallas’s Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus proregulus. Furthermore, the first breeding of Greenish Warbler Phylloscopus trochiloides was recorded, 5 years after the first country record of this species. The second breeding attempt, unfortunately unsuccessful, was recorded for Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea. Another record from 2014 concerns the first breeding attempt of Little Egret Egretta garzetta. Further remarkable observations concern the 9th record of Audouin’s Gull Larus audouinii, the 13th record of River Warbler Locustella fluviatilis and the 9th to 11th records of Common Chiffchaff with characters of the subspecies Phylloscopus collybita tristis. With a total of 10 records, the year 2015 represents the best year for Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus so far. Furthermore it was the second-best year behind 2008 for Great Snipe Gallinago media with a total of 5 records involving 6 birds. All previously accepted records of Bonelli’s Eagle Aquila fasciata were placed into the category E (escaped from captivity) following a revision of all sightings, after the repeated observation of a captive-origin individual and as the series of adult-only sightings in Switzerland continued. At the end of 2015, the Swiss list comprised 412 species in categories A, B (birds of wild origin) and C (introduced species), 405 of which have been recorded since 1900. Nine species remain in category D (doubtful origin). In the text, the three numbers after the German and scientific names refer to the number of records/individuals, 1900–1991, 1992–2014 and in 2015, respectively. The species are listed systematically, and within species records are listed in alphabetic order of cantons and by date. Detailed information is given as follows: location, date(s), number of individuals (one individual if not specified), age and sex if known, available documentation (photographs, video, audio recordings, skins) and in brackets the name(s) of the observer(s).
