Abstract
The Common Woodpigeon Columba palumbus as an increasing winter guest in the greater Solothurn area (cantons of Solothurn and Berne). In the greater Solothurn area (360 km²), the Common Woodpigeon has increased strongly as a winter guest in recent years. For this study, observations between 2 December and 14 February (pentades 68–73 and 1–9) from the winters 1994/95 to 2018/19 were evaluated, based on data from the Swiss Ornithological Institute. The first suggested overwintering occurred in 2000/01. In the winter of 2009/10, the winter population reached its first peak. Since then, the number of kilometer squares with observations has continued to increase and in the winter of 2018/19 by far the most Woodpigeons were found. In an intensely studied 32 km² area of the Aare plain, the observation series goes back to 1980/81. In this arable site with little wooded area, the development began about 10 years later than in the rest of the region, but the species increased similarly strongly. Recently, wintering Woodpigeons have also been increasingly staying in the settlement area. Around Solothurn, the median of the first observation of a singing Woodpigeon shifted 4 weeks between 1980 and 2019, from 27 February (1980–2000) to 31 January (2001–2019). Recently the first singing Woodpigeons can even be heard at the end of December.
