Abstract
Observations on the migration of the Eurasian Woodcock Scolopax rusticola in the forests of Bucheggberg (cantons of Solothurn and Bern). The migration of the Eurasian Woodcock was observed between autumn 2015 and spring 2018, mainly from October to March, in Bucheggberg (cantons of Solothurn and Bern, approx. 500–650 m a.s.l.). The survey visits were mainly carried out at dusk, with a few at dawn. In forest clearings, attention was paid to overflying Woodcocks. In 61 % of the 338 visits and at 17 of the 23 sites examined, Woodcocks were found at least once. Woodcocks can be relatively easily detected during the migration period by searching in forest clearings at suitable sites. The birds often fly past several times during a visit. In the evening, the first birds appeared on average 32 minutes after sunset. During the visits at which a Woodcock was recorded, on average 1.75 overflights were observed. The migration lasted from October to December/January and from mid-February to late March/early April. In the winter of 2017/2018, Woodcocks were observed at three sites throughout the winter.
