The avifauna of the Schaffhausen region around 1880: the obervations and the collection of the veterinarian Johann Jakob Pfeiffer from Neunkirch (canton of Schaffhausen). – While from the late 19th century, the plant and insect species of the Schaffhausen region are well documented by records and collections, there are hardly reliable sources for the local avifauna. Therefore, the handwritten observations and the collection of Johann Jakob Pfeiffer (1832–1888) are unique documents. Pfeiffer was a veterinarian, and he documented his ornithological observations between 1854 and 1888 in a detailed diary. He described in detail the breeding occurrence of the Osprey Pandion haliaetus on the wooded hills near Schaffhausen and documented for the first time the breeding of Corncrake Crex crex and European Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus in the Schaffhausen region. In total, Pfeiffer mentioned 177 bird species, of which 116 were breeding birds. Today, 19 of these species no longer breed in the region. The changes in numbers of winter visitors and migratory bird species are smaller. He regularly observed Crested Larks Galerida cristata in winter. Fieldfares Turdus pilaris were at that time only winter visitors and Western Yellow Wagtails Motacilla flava were migrants only. Although it is not a systematic survey, the records give an impression of the avifauna of the Schaffhausen region for the second half of the 19th century, but hardly any conclusions on the number of breeding pairs are possible. Pfeiffer recorded arrival dates of migratory bird species. Arrival dates of long-distance migrants such as Common Quail Coturnix coturnix, Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus and Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica have hardly changed in the last 150 years. Eurasian Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla and European Serin Serinus serinus were exclusively migratory species and tended to arrive later than today.
