Abstract
Maximum numbers of broods of Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula in the Upper Engadine (Grisons) 2013. The Tufted Duck has been breeding regularly in the Upper Engadine since 1991, and numbers have been increasing. Surveys of the potential breeding sites in 2013 revealed a minimum of 120 broods with a total of 459 chicks, the highest number recorded so far. The four most important sites held 76 broods. In the whole of the canton of Grisons, 129 broods were recorded in 2013, and 277 in the whole of Switzerland. Thus, the Upper Engadine held more than 40 % of the Swiss breeding population. Since then, the population size is again lower: in the Upper Engadine just 54–56 broods were recorded in 2014 and 2015, and in the whole of Switzerland 182–183.
