Abstract
The Heath of Malles – an irrigated landscape of high importance for meadow-breeding birds. It is known that the irrigation of meadows in dry areas can negatively affect breeding birds. We tested whether the type of irrigation system also influences the occurrence of breeding birds. We thus recorded breeding birds in the Heath of Malles, a grassland area of 7,48 km2 (South Tyrol, Province Bozen/Bolzano, Italy), which is partly irrigated by traditional irrigation using water channels and partly with sprinklers. Contrary to our anticipation, sprinkler-irrigated areas were significantly more frequently occupied by Whinchats Saxicola rubetra than traditionally irrigated areas. A similar, non-significant trend was found for Eurasian Skylarks Alauda arvensis. In relation to the number of species, no influence of the irrigation system was found. These population surveys emphasise the high importance of the Heath of Malles area for ground-breeding birds. The Skylark in particular reaches a very high territory density for grasslands (15.9 territories/km2), which can rarely be observed elsewhere in the Alps. The Whinchat also reaches a remarkable territory density (5.5 territories/km2). It is expected that the intensification of land use will advance in the near future and that in consequence, existing nature values could be under threat. We recommend that efforts for meadow conservation in the Heath of Malles region be treated with high priority.
