Abstract
Factors affecting the occupancy of artificial nests by the Common House Martin Delichon urbicum. Artificial nests are being installed as a measure to counteract reduced breeding of the Common House Martin that arises from a lack of natural nesting materials. To identify factors maximizing their occupation, we examined 351 artificial nests distributed in 65 different locations within the canton of Zurich. Higher occupation rates were noted at farmhouses as compared to other buildings, even in the absence of livestock. In contrast, the construction material of the host building did not affect occupancy rates. Nests oriented towards the south were slightly preferred. Proximity to natural nests was a significant factor in the acceptance of artificial nests.
