Abstract
A study of visible bird migration in the delta of the Bojana-Buna River (Montenegro/Albania) off the south-eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea in March 2010. – In the frame of EuroNatur’s «Adriatic Flyway» project, International Waterbird Censuses (IWC) are conducted in the Bojana-Buna river delta and on Lake Scutari. They indicate that population numbers have heavily declined since the last Balkan wars. Hence, for estimating the magnitude of offshore waterbird migration, spatial and temporal patterns of visible bird migration were investigated in the mouth of the Bojana-Buna River from 2 to 30 March 2010. Overall 39738 migrants, including 37286 actively migrating birds, were noted during 183 h of observation between sunrise and noon and 1 p.m., respectively. Total numbers of migrants per day fluctuated between 10 and 5476 individuals (ind.). Mean migration intensity increased during early morning and peaked between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Above the sea it was significantly larger (189 ind./h) than along the shoreline (104 ind./h). With 265 ± 324 ind./h migration intensity above sea was highest during wind speeds between 13 and 29 km/h (Beaufort 3–4), while migration intensity was significantly lower during wind speeds of ≥30 km/h (22 ± 18 ind./h). Numbers of migrating Garganey Anas querquedula, Northern Shoveler A. clypeata, Eurasian Wigeon A. penelope, Red-throated Loon Gavia stellata, Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca, Common Crane Grus grus and Little Gull Hydrocoloeus minutus surpassed the 1-%-criterion of the Ramsar Convention for the identification of important wintering and resting sites. The magnitude of bird migration in the Bojana-Buna Delta supports suggestions to recognize the route between North Africa, Sicily and the Balkan Peninsula as a distinct multi-species migration corridor («Adriatic Flyway») within the broader «Central Europe/Black Sea/Mediterranean Flyway». In early March, till 5 and 6 March, duck shooting was at its height on the adjoining beach (Velika Plaža). During this period almost a third of all ducks which approached the coast from the sea headed towards the southern river mouth of the Bojana-Buna into the largely undisturbed area along the Albanian-Montenegrin border. In comparison to the low numbers of resting migrants, the suitability of Lake Scutari and the coastal wetlands of the Bojana-Buna Delta, currently, appears to be heavily impaired by bird shooting and poaching.
