Abstract
Trends in tetraonid research. Black Grouse Tetrao tetrix and Capercaillie T. urogallus are considered to be model species for the conservation of moorland and old growth forest. Within the last decades research in grouse has largely benefitted from methodological advances and the research is now more often focused on applied conservation questions. Genetic methods have led to a new research field (Conservation genetics) where grouse have been intensively studied. Stable isotope and hormone analysis both also contribute to a better understanding of dispersal, food choice and the impact of human activities. Modelling approaches help us to identify priority areas for conservation on a landscape scale and enable us to estimate how environmental changes will impact grouse populations in the future.
