Abstract
Habitat diversity and bird densities in a rural landscape in southern Bavaria, Germany. Using grid mapping (6.25 ha grid) with subunits based on the habitat types «agricultural land», «forest», and «settlement», birds were recorded during the breeding season and in winter in a typical cultural landscape 50 km north of Munich (Germany). Grid units with a high habitat diversity (edge ecotones) showed much higher bird activities than grid units containing only one habitat type. Out of all species only the Eurasian Skylark preferred open, homogenous agricultural land. Further results show that activities of birds in the breeding season as well as in winter increased if the connectivity of habitat types within the landscape was high (effects of forest edge, settlement edge, distance between forests and settlements). The results show that when defining study area design for estimating bird populations over large areas, a stratified selection process based upon «homogenous» habitat types only will severely underestimate real bird abundance at least in well structured landscapes typical for wide regions in central Europe. We recommend a correction using threshold analysis or to switch to a landscape-based selection of study areas.
