Abstract
Bird conservation in Switzerland: benefit from the experiences in the past for the future. Bird conservation in Switzerland started to be active almost 150 years ago. Of 10 issues which were most discussed a century ago, only 2 could be solved in the mean time. The other ones are still pending. And many more were added. So the many successes of the bird protection organisations as SVS/BirdLife Switzerland, Ala, Swiss Society for the Study and Conservation of Birds, Nos Oiseaux, Ficedula, the SVS cantonal associations and local groups and of the Swiss Ornithological Institute were overshadowed by new threats. In many cases in the context of nature conservation bird protection played a pioneer role: first large wetland reserves and international cooperation in the 1920s, first inventories of important waterbird sites, first cantonal ornithological inventories and first Swiss Red Data Books in the 1970s, later first campaign for habitat conservation and recently the Swiss Species Recovery Programme for Birds, the Swiss Bird Index SBI® and the creation of the Parlamentarian Group for Biodiversity. But the development of bird conservation in the future is uncertain due to climate change, the food crisis and the recently emerged economic crisis.
