Abstract
Effects of recreation activities on flushing behaviour, habitat use and stress physiology of Western Capercaillie. The Western Capercaillie is a forest grouse known to be sensitive to disturbance and with requirements for high-quality habitats. During the last decades, habitat quality strongly declined while recreation activities significantly increased. This study confirmed that Capercaillie strongly respond to humans, especially to off-trail winter recreation activities. Flushing distance was larger in areas with high recreation intensity or hunting pressure than in undisturbed forest patches. During the ski season, Capercaillie avoided forest patches with high recreation intensity within their home ranges. Furthermore, they showed increased stress hormone levels with decreasing distance to the next location with winter recreation activity. The establishment of wildlife refuges or the setting up of regulations requiring winter recreationists to stay on trails enable Capercaillie to use its important habitats, even if they lie close to winter tourism centers.
