Abstract
Rare and unusual records of breeding, migrating and wintering bird species in Switzerland, 2005. In spring and summer 2005, there was an invasion of Common Quails Coturnix coturnix. The Spectacled Warbler Sylvia conspicillata bred for the second time, the Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon for the 3rd and the 4th time, the Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna for the 4th and the 5th time and the Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator for the 5th time. The Purple Heron Ardea purpurea bred for the second year running after an absence of breeding records between 1988 and 2003. The Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo bred in increasing numbers and founded two new colonies. Five new breeding sites of the European Bee-eater Merops apiaster were also discovered. The Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator further declined with only one breeding pair left. In August, massive rainfalls caused flooding in several parts of the country. This situation forced many migrants to stop and species like White Storks Ciconia ciconia and waders were observed in the flooded areas in unusual numbers. In September and October, an invasion of Coal Tits Parus ater, Great Tits P. major, Blue Tits P. caeruleus and European Nuthatches Sitta europaea took place. A new influx of «Northern» Bullfinches Pyrrhula pyrrhula was noted from the end of October onwards, reaching its peak in November. A Black Stork Ciconia nigra overwintered again (6th overwintering record) as well as two Common Cranes Grus grus at two different sites.
