Abstract
Winter moult of Ptarmigan Lagopus mutus in the Aletsch region, Swiss Alps. From the end of March to the end of June 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1985 the state of the winter moult of every observed individual was recorded every one or two weeks. 364 sketches were made in the field. As Ptarmigan very rarely leave their territories during this time of the year, the progress of the moult could be followed up individually. In contrast to northern Europe, in the Swiss Alps moult starts earlier in cocks than in hens. Winter moult ends in both sexes at the same time, before the start of the breeding period. This is in accordance with Scottish populations. In years with late snowmelt the winter moult started 2 or 3 weeks later than in years when the snow melted early. Medium temperatures seem to have an indirect influence only: If the weather is warm, snow-free patches for feeding are available earlier and there are sprouting plants especially rich in proteins.
