Abstract
Non-indigenous bird species established in Europe – a review. In Europe, at least 21 non-indigenous bird species have established breeding populations. They preferably settle in man-made urban and rural habitats. Some populations have been increasing and spreading rapidly. Alien invasive species can pose a serious threat to native biodiversity, mainly through competition (Canada Goose Branta canadensis, Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri), hybridisation (Ruddy Duck Oxyura jamaicensis, Japanese Quail Coturnix japonica), predation and the transmission of parasites and pathogens. They can also cause severe damage in agriculture (Canada Goose, Rose-ringed Parakeet). These problems are often irreversible. Therefore, preventive measures against further establishment of alien invasive species are of great importance.
In Switzerland, only Mandarin Duck Aix galericulata and Ring-necked Pheasant Phasianus colchicus have established naturalised populations. In addition, numbers of breeding Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea, originating from escaped birds, are increasing and spreading rapidly, with more than 400 individuals counted in 2004.
