Abstract
Common Eider Somateria mollissima leading young Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina. Common Eider and Red-crested Pochard settled by natural expansion of their range on Lake Zurich in the region of Rapperswil (canton of St. Gallen). Normally, the breeding areas of the two species do not overlap. Since 1988 families of Common Eider have been observed in 5 years. In 2002 and in 2003, the families contained one young Red-crested Pochard. The first observations of both mixed families were made on the day of hatching or shortly later, suggesting that female Red-crested Pochard had laid their eggs in the nests of the Common Eiders. Nest parasitism by Red-crested Pochard and other Anatidae species like Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula or Common Pochard A. ferina has frequently been documented.
